WHAT IS VITAMIN E?

Tocopherol (WikiMedia)Vitamin E is a fat soluble antioxidant, essential for health. It refers to a group of related compounds which includes tocopherols and tocotrienols. In humans, only alpha-tocopherol is specifically selected and enriched by the liver and is therefore the most abundant in the human body.

NEED OF VITAMIN E:

The body needs vitamin E to help keep the immune system strong against viruses and bacteria. Body also needs Vitamin E to boost its immune system so that it can fight off invading bacteria and viruses.

WHY VITAMIN E IS IMPORTANT?

Vitamin E is a well-known antioxidant and it has multiple biological roles in our body.  Vitamin E plays very important role for healthy life. It helps protecting body tissue and cells from damage caused by substance called free radicals. Free radicals are compounds formed when our bodies convert the food we eat into energy. It can harm cells, tissues, and organs. They are believed to play a role in certain conditions related to ageing. People are also exposed to free radicals in the environment from cigarette smoke, air pollution, and ultra-violate light from the sun.

IMPORTANT ROLES AND FUNCTIONS OF VITAMIN E:

Vitamin E plays an important role in protecting cells against free radicals. It also plays a role in preventing oxidation of Vitamin A and Vitamin C. Regeneration of the reduced form of Vitamin C is a beneficial physiological effect of Vitamin E. Most common form of Vitamin E used for medicinal purpose is Tocopheryl Acetate. Vitamin E functions physiologically as chain-breaking antioxidant that prevents the propagation of lipid peroxidation. Dietary intake of Vitamin E offers protection for Deoxyribonucleic Acid (DNA) and proteins from oxidative damage. Vitamin E is an integral part of the skin’s antioxidant defenses, primarily providing protection against UV radiation and other free radicals that may come in contact with epidermis (skin).

BENEFITS AND USES OF VITAMIN E:

The most widely known health benefits of Vitamin E are protection against toxins such as air pollution, premenstrual syndrome (PMS), eye disorders such as cataracts, neurological diseases such as Alzheimer’s diseases etc. Some people use Vitamin E for treating and preventing diseases of the heart attacks (Myocardial Infarction or MI), chest pains, leg pain due to blocked arteries and high blood pressure (BP). It is also used for treating diabetes, preventing lung and oral cancer in smokers; colorectal cancer, gastric, prostate and pancreatic cancer. Women use Vitamin E for preventing complications in late pregnancy due to high blood pressure, premenstrual syndrome (PMS), painful menstruation (periods), menopausal syndrome, hot flashes associated with breast cancer and breast cysts. Sometimes it is used to lessen the harmful effects of dialysis and radiation. Vitamin E is also used for treatments of Skin care and Hair care.

Vitamin E Can Also Be Obtained As A Food Supplement.:

Vitamin E food supplements are prescribed when human body is for some reason, unable to absorb the nutrient from regular diet. It is prescribed in form of oil for extract used on skin and in hair for growth and nourishment. Kiwi and Tomatoes are the best sources of Vitamin E food supplements.

SYMPTOMS OF VITAMIN E DEFICIENCY

Vitamin E needs some fat for the digestive system to absorb it. Hence, Vitamin E deficiency is mostly associated with certain diseases where fat is not properly digested or absorbed. Examples include Crohn’s desease, cystic, fribrosis, and certain rare genetic diseases such as Abetalipoproteinemia and ataxia with Vitamin E deficiency (AVED).

Vitamin E deficiency can cause dry hair loss, muscular weakness, slow tissue healing, leg cramps, peripheral neuropathy (weakness, numbness and pain, usually in hands and feet), ataxia (loss of full control of bodily movements), skeletal myopathy (muscle disease resulting into muscle weakness), retinopathy (impairment or loss of vision), and weakened immune response.

HOW MUCH VITAMIN E IS REQUIRED?
(Doses And Side Effects Of Vitamin E)

Eating Vitamin E in food is not risky or harmful. In supplement form, however, high doses of Vitamin E might increase the risk of bleeding (by reducing the blood’s ability to form clots after a cut or injury) and of serious bleeding in the brain (known as haemorrhagic stroke). High level of vitamin E may also increase the risk of birth defects (infertility). Low intake may lead to hemolytic anemia.

Doses: The daily recommended dietary allowance of Vitamin E for adults is 15 mg (22.4 International Units (IU)). Because of this risk, the upper limit for adults is 1,500 IU/day for supplements made from the natural form of Vitamin E and 1,100 IU/day for supplements made from synthetic Vitamin E. The upper limits for children are lower than those for adults.

MY EXPERIENCE:

Did you recognize the bald person looking in this picture? Looks like never seen before? Guess … No! He is not a villain of any feature film. HahahaJ ! Trust me, you know him very well... Okay let me introduce him to you… He is none other than the one who is writing this article… Yes! It’s me! And believe me, it was not my passion to get bald. My hairs had stopped growing around some part of my head in 2014. I was anxious of hair fall. I went to the Dr. Afsar Sheikh who diagnosed the deficiency of Vitamin E in my body. He advised me to be bald as a part of my hair care. The doctor injected some injections periodically and prescribed some homeopathic tablets, dermatological soap, ointments and Vitamin E creams to apply on the head. Unfortunately I don’t remember the names of those Vitamin E food supplements; but I followed a diet chart full with ingredients containing Vitamin E during my hair treatment.

After following diet and medicines as per doses prescribed by the doctor, my hair problem is totally cured now. See I am looking like a gentleman now- HahahaJ!!
